ah ski ski ski

yesterday was tuesday. you know what that means? ski class! two hours of unadulterated time away from provo up at sundance frolicking in manmade snow. it doesn't get much better! you see that? that's me per kelsey's sweet iphone in skiing garb and i can't believe i haven't written all about it yet. (the skiing, not the spiffy iphone, although that's pretty awe-inducing, too) i mean, granted i've only been twice and there are children 1/4 of my age doing a heckuva lot trickier stuff than i am, but nonetheless i am learning and it is exciting.
i've got a wicked snow plow.
sometimes i can turn.
my toes are habitually numb. forever.
anybody up for a little weekday shred? i can't promise that they won't have to slow down the lift so i can get on in one piece, but i promise not to intentionally knock you over when we're getting off (or at least i will put forth my best effort)
oh, and would you pray for some snow to fall? i think that might enhance the experience, although i can't exactly complain about the shining sun.

more pictures. no ski trip is complete without a photo shoot, obviously.

start spreading the news.

third time's a charm. that's what they say, right?
three years at byu and three major changes. ayyy! hopefully this is the end all of these changes. freshman year i was a biology major. i was going to be a dentist and that was the plan.
sophomore year i was a pre-dietetics major. i was going to be a dietetician, and that was the plan.
junior year, well, welcome to the new plan.
a couple days ago i was laying on the couch watching forks over knives, yet another documentary about food production in the us. (watch it. it's really great.)
i zoned out for a minute as my mind drifted to the ever present question of what exactly i wanted to do with my life. then it came to me, and all of a sudden everything just started to make sense. public health.  what hadn't i thought of it before? when i was a dietetics major, i told everybody that in the end, i wanted to educate about health and whole foods, work internationally, and do something with early childhood nutrition. while you could probably do something like that with dietetics, mostly an entry level dietician is going to be working in a hospital telling diabetics what they can and can't eat. red flag. wrong major.
anyways, thats the sitch and although i won't be done with school for ten years, i'm still breathing a sigh of relief.
and bought my copy of mylo xyloto. (and i suggest you do the same!)

september first

summer's over. i wore a cardigan. if cardigans don't say autumn and typical byu girl student, i don't know what does.
you see that pucker between my buttons? it's been causing problems. it keeps popping open and surprising all the people i come into contact with. what can i say? i'm just so darn busty. (joke)

but really, i am sad to see summer go.
i'm happy for fall, though! bring on the pumpkin, boots, and trendy cardigans.
oh, and i just have to share this.

it's probably violating laws for me to post such a picture, so don't tell.
this lady, a former co-worker called th other day to make this burn appointment. anyway, evidentially while playing relief society president/mortician she picked up the curling iron by the wrong end and burned all her fingers.
i laughed and laughed and laughed. i hope you do, too.

now i am going to try to find a safety pin for this shirt/teach myself chemistry. it's a tie between which task will be most difficult.

reading days daze

reading days are byu's version of spring break where we get 2 days off to study our brains out before finals start. on a saturday, mind you. they they go again, crackin that good ol' byu whip.
mostly i never study on reading days, but today went as follows:
8a- wake up. watch modern family. eat oatmeal with best blueberries in provo
930a- library with kelsey. 4th floor. tried to get excited about studying viruses, but could only think about spain and summer. curse you finals
11a- go to a scheduled physiology review, but seems like the joke was on me. i was the only one who showed up. not even the ta came! i perfected my resume instead.
1215p- head to the widtsoe to copy down all the microbiology tests to study off of. uuuuuuuuugh. sigh. choking sounds. i can't wait til saturday at 10 pm when mmbio 221 will be out of my life. FOREVER.
1p- lunch time. cottage cheese and asparagus pasta with ample salt and pepper.
2p- back to campus for another physiology review. this time i actually got some studying done.
4p- time to do laundry/borrow grandma's vacuum to clean out my disgusting car. one load of laundry takes 4 hours, seeing as I forget to: a. turn the dryer on and come down an hour later to still wet clothes and: b. turn it on and come down another hour later to find the dryer off and my clothes still wet. oh well, grandma made some killer peanut butter cookies and will farrell was hilarious on the office.
10p- gym time. i was supposed to go this morning at 630 to train with a roving trainer that tracked me down yesterday and said i, "looked like i'd worked out with a trainer before" good try, novice trainer guy. right after i agreed to a session (mainly to just make him go away so i could get back to looking like an idiot as i jumped up and down on a bench 20 more times) i realized there was no way in this world or the next i was getting up that early on a reading day. maybe if he would have been cuter.
maybe.
i came home to boxes and bags strewn about the apartment. everyone is starting to move their stuff out and its weird to see so many blank walls.  mansion 34, your days are numbered.

two firsts and many endings

first number one:
i finally went to general conference. i can't believe in the 40 ish general conferences i've been around for, i'd never been before. i used to be a proponent of "watch it on the couch with a stomach full of pancakes and usually fall asleep during hymn" but maaaan my tune has changed.
one of my work friends and i made the trek to slc to see the sunday afternoon session because she scored some really great seats down on the floor from a friend who got tickets from virginia. the people around us were from ny and canada, so i think my observations are correct, and church members outside of utah are favored at these types of events.
anyways, the precedings were fantastic. my favorite part? when the prophet came out and everyone stood and fell silent. silent! not one word! not one cough! the opening prayer was noisier, i tell you. it was the coolest experience, sitting in that conference center with so many important people.
i shall be returning.

first number two:
yesterday i journeyed down into the special collections section of the library to do some research for a paper. boy did i feel a. stupid because i didn't know one thing about finding things in the library and then b. pretty legit when i found out my book was rare and important. basically special collections is where they keep all the old and important rare works that byu has collected over the years, and they live behind closed doors and glass walls. i felt like nicolas cage in the national archives national treasure style. or harry in the restricted section of hogwarts.
i had to show proof i was a student, lock up my bag, and take off my jacket. i could only use the pencils and paper in the special room where i gingerly flipped through the pages of "el torero- the art of bullfighting". i had to have an interview with a curator and swear on my grave i wouldn't write on the book. it was really funny. and really awesome.

as for the endings, well, yesterday i realized that i only have one week of school left. one measly week to tie up the loose ends of the semester and buckle down for those finals... of which actually won't be too bad this semester, seeing as i only have 2 finals and 1 paper. also, i think the snow might stop. i hope so. the grass is turning green. i like it.
i would be a liar if i didn't say i am getting a little anxious for school to end, though. what am i going to do until i can start working full time at the end of may?
if anyone knows of any more jobs or suggestions or free plane tickets abroad, let me know.

8 minute update

this weekend:
jordan got engaged. her ring is beautiful. her and stefan are a great couple, and i want him to pick out my wedding ring, too cuz maaaaaaan he has the choosing skills! their date is july 28.... so let the planning begin! i'm glad i am just a spectator in this sport.

we went to power progressive tumbling for brittney's birthday a little early because she is going to mexico on the real day. it was great and i woke up feeling like i'd been hit by a truck the next morning... but it was fun nonetheless.

sunday was the longest day ever! we got up before the sun and drove to slc for kelsey's cousin's baby's blessing (haha do you follow me?) then came back for church, then went to eat with the family, then came home and vegged and did no homework or anything productive. it was great.
and now my time is up and i must whisk myself off to a beautful morning at work. happy monday!

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

excuse me,

can i sit here?
this has got to be the worst question in the world of studying at the HBLL.
mainly because usually it's gingers who ask.
or engaged couples.
exhibit a: couple sitting across from me, scooting their chairs closer and closer and feeding each other chocolate. niiiiice. (i believe you can reserve rooms.. maybe i should slide them a note and tell them to look into that)
man, i just wanted to study glycolysis in peace.

nothing says weekend

like 18 hours at the peds clinic.
if i have to give the run down on how to complete an insurance verification paper one more time, well, i won't be the happiest camper. work has infected my dreams, too. i tossed and turned all night dreaming about paperwork and nurses and putting calls on hold. eek!
in other news, I am addicted to almond butter and pretzels.
i made these waffles this morning and they were great.
i ran on the treadmill for an hour yesterday and it wasn't all unpleasant, especially when i have food network to watch.
jordan is now 20 and we surprised her with a great party and bowling and games and excitement. i rather enjoyed it. happy birthday roommate
i vacuumed our carpet. that may sound like small potatoes, but maaaaan having guests pick up hairballs probably doesn't showcase any hosting skills. it needed to be done.
my mom is coming next weekend. i am excited

Thursday, January 27, 2011

when i am old, i will tell my children I was a witness to the year of the jimmer.

43 points against sdsu?
no big deal.
it's good to go to jimmer fredette university

i know the heart of life is good

John Mayer has made his way into my life lately. not complaining.
Naturally, January sucks. But, as I see it, every day passed is just one less day of winter. I like that. Winter is becoming more manageable.... but maybe that is simply because the last two days it's just been rain rain rain. Which I also like, seeing as it's been washing away a nasty inversion spell and my car in the process. Win win.
here are some of the good things life has packed lately:

pandora on my phone. Never will I have to endure another Kelly Clarkson hit per Utah FM thanks to internet radio and a three dollar ebay adapter. Kings of Leon radio. listen in!

this little baby that I like a lot. I haven't been around an infant in a looooooong time but little Evie Pugh is just the most precious thing I've ever laid eyes on. What a doll!

Sam is not going to die. For the past few months, my roommate has been a world of hurt with some serious gastrointestinal problems. But after many prayers and much patience the strongest girl I know got some answers and life is looking a little brighter for her! hallelujah

I took myself on a date to Rubio's Saturday between work shifts. There is something great about going alone to eat and getting yourself a burrito. And eating it like a heathen.

Intramural soccer started and my life was again complete and the void was filled. There was something so heartwarming to have old friends together, repping our jerseys and scoring goals in the name of Spain. Even if we lost... next time, next time.

I finally did the thing I always wanted. Sit at Borders all day long and just read. Let's just say after four hours my rear was sore, but I had more than made a dent in Mockingjay... and actually the whole trilogy has been completed. yessssss

and we can't forget the fort. it was much cooler in person.... but this will do
oh, and happy MLK day. My day was really great. I worked to get that money, grocery shopped, went to the gym and ran and watched food network, and then came home and cooked. It was fabulous.  Just the way a day of break should be spent. Tomorrow it's back to the grind... but I like it.

i've been away too long

and I know it because I just looked out my backyard window and saw that the tree we bought as a twig all those years ago is probably the size of the one in Rockefeller Center. what happened?
The flight home was wonderful. much better than any old drive would have been! the flight from SLC to BOI is wonderful because you basically ascend into the atmosphere, stay there about 10 minutes, and then it's back down and you're descending into beautiful Boise! I do love it.
I seriously love Christmas break already. I have nothing to do. NOTHING. When Pat asked me what I was gonna do over break, I told him I was gonna read and sleep on my couch. Well people, I accomplished both those things yesterday- I read one page of Hunger games and was out cold. I like it.
As for finals, they went meh... they're over. I think I slid by with some pretty average grades but whatever I NEVER HAVE TO TAKE ACCOUNTING AGAIN. That is truly a Christmas miracle.
I feel like I should do some kind of first semester recap of all the great things that happened... okay you talked me into it.

BEST PARTS:
Anatomy and feeling smart when I hear the doctors saying smart doctor-y words at work.
Me and Pat's really great dates.
Living with great people.
Cooking with Anita
Chase Baker and his wonderful shows.
Going to St. George and leaving Happy Valley.
Dinner parties and other gatherings.
Working a great job.
Lots of other things.

WORST PARTS:
4 tickets in 6 months. 2 speeding, 2 parking. Honestly UPD. Get off my case.
Liberty Square Maintenance. Pretty sure we spend a good half of the semester living in darkness. Seriously, how many maintenance workers will it take to screw in a lightbulb?!
That's really all I can think of.

Alright, well guess it's time to play carpool again. Since I'm home all the sibs just think they can make me come pick them up whenever they like. And I do. I'm whipped.
Cheers

twenty minute time kill

I discovered nectarines the other day. They're delicious and I don't know why I never ate them before.
International Cinema is becoming my home, seeing as I have to watch bucketloads of movies for my Spanish Lit class. (Which may or may not main me. I can't tell yet) Last night I saw Il Postino, and it made me miss Italy a lot, and wish I didn't have food poisoning when I was there. Pity. Guess I'll have to go back? The friends and I went to Slumdog Millionaire the other day, too. I cried. I don't cry. Basically I came to the conclusion that I need to go to India... but til then I will just get my culture dose from IC.
I posted it as my facebook status the other day, but I just can't get how funny this is. BYU is having a mustache contest for one of their fall festivals, and the winner of contest gets a discounted engagement ring. Oh BYU.
It's getting to be fall and I like it. I can finally make pumpkin bread and cookies and cakes and whatever the heck else I want and it will feel seasonal and delicious. I can't wait for the leaves to change and the air to start getting crisp. (And I can't wait to break out the cardigans and my Uggs. Oh, how my feet miss the Uggs!)
Anatomy may just kill me. I am scared. I had lab yesterday, and basically I have to memorize every single crevice of the human skeleton. Ask me in a couple days, and maybe  I will be able to tell you where the cilca tursica is. Maybe. Hey, people have passed the class before, right? Right?
Winco has come to Utah and the bulk section makes me want to jump for joy and buy all their dried fruit. I love it.
Fin.

what I did on labor day.

no labor. that is for sure.
the homework was kept to a minimum. and I did this stuff instead
1. Kneaders. Unlimited french toast for 5 bucks was delicious, and everyone at BYU thought the same, so we ended up eating ours on the pavement of the drive thru. Don't worry, it was still fantastic. And because I am a fatty I out ate everyone. Skinny friends suck! (but I still like them)
2. Soccer. We had a little pick up game, and I slipped and slided all over in my turf shoes, which are not made for grass. Intramurals start next week and our girls' team is going to dominate.
3. Bicycle. After way too many months without the clanking of my old chain, I retrieved my rusty 10 speed from Grandma's garage, paid way too much to get it fixed up a little, and was happy to have a hobby again. Silver Bullet, I missed you.
4. BBQ. Sam's family graciously invited us over for some hamburgers and the like, only too bad I don't eat hamburgers. Don't worry- I had cheese on a hamburger bun.
5. Charlotte Russe. We did a little retail therapy and I got a new sweater. Too bad it's still a good 85 degrees outside.
6. Homework. Okay, the day is ending with a little bit of those things I shouldn't have kept til the end of the week, but I did anyways.
Oh well :) Anyways, looks like it's time to go put all my white pants away, and here's to only 3 days of class this week and Boise this weekend to see Miss Morales become Mrs. Cole.
Til next time, and Happy Birthday, Mom.
Oh, and here are some great vids for your viewing pleasure. Basically we've been obsessed with them all week.

welcome to the mansion

in the location I have coined Mt. Everest. There is nothing like coming home at the end of a long day and being warmly greeted by 6.5 sets of stairs. I will have fabulous thighs by the end of the year... at least that is the plan.
And don't worry- I have only almost burned the place down once.... note to self: don't try to make breadcrumbs in the oven. Just buy them. If you do though, make sure to time them. If you don't and end up burning them to something resembling charcoal, make sure to take them out of the oven. The billows of smoke contained inside don't just go away.
Anyways, meet the family & come visit.

Lessons from Walmart

Walmart has become a motif in my life lately- I go there every other day it seems. Last night was no different, as we had little to do, Corey needed fishing line to hang some plants (long story) and I wanted chocolate chips. (which I didn't actually end up buying) As we ended our adventure and pulled out of the parking lot, Shane spotted a guy sitting by the road. He was holding a sign that said, "Need Work", and then went on to list his abilities and work experience. I looked and didn't really give it a second thought, but Shane did. The next thing I knew, we were flipping around, and he was digging through his wallet for some cash. "He looks like a descent guy. You guys want to get out with me?" Corey and I both jumped out of the car and followed Shane, as he made a B line for the corner. If there is one thing BYU has taught me so far, it is that campus is full of people much better than I. I am lucky to be able to call some of those people my friends.
As we approached, Shane greeted the guy, and started making conversation. Suddenly we were enveloped in the life of the guy, Paul, as he told us his story. He'd come from Ohio looking for work, had no family, and was sleeping on a hill by Walmart where raccoons kept him company. He'd had no luck finding a good job, and he was just trying to get by day by day, hoping that he' d be able to find some kind of work. He'd been doing construction all his life, but was getting too old for the physicality of the job. He goes to the Provo library every day looking for jobs on craigslist, but sometimes can't afford to go because it costs a dollar to use the internet. He gets around by walking and riding the bus, and then sits at Walmart and waits. He showed us the leads he'd gotten from people that day, phone numbers to call, people to talk to, and Shane also gave him some info on jobs he'd had working in Orem. As we sat and talked, it was so interesting to see the way people are as they drive by a homeless person. Some would yell out, "get a job!" and others would honk, yell, or stare. He showed us the rock he was sitting on, and told us that someone leaving Walmart had tried to run over a homeless guy sitting there awhile before. We saw the tracks of the car, the broken up rock, and I just kind of wondered what kind of a person would do that. I mean, seriously? While some people were a little less than accommodating to Paul, others stopped and gave him a few bucks as they passed. The gratitude exhibited in Paul's voice as he said thank you showed how truly thankful he was for the little money he had. "Now I can do my laundry!" he exclaimed, and repeatedly told us that we must be a good luck charm for him that night, because people were never so generous. We talked to Paul for a good 45 minutes or so, and then our meeting was cut short when Paul spotted a policeman pulling someone over. He folded up his sign, put it in his bag, and said the cops didn't like to see him with his sign out. He told us how thankful he was that we came and talked to him- he obviously didn't get a lot of social interaction- and when someone did talk to him, they were in for an earful.
While all this was going on, I thought about how I could help Paul- I didn't have any money on me, food, or anything. I mentally went through my wallet, accounting for the items I had in there. Then, suddenly, I remembered I had a pass along card a missionary at BYU had given me this summer in my wallet.( A pass along card is, well, a card that has a picture, like of Christ or the temple, on the front, and on the back there is a number to contact missionaries if you're interested in investigating the LDS church.) I pulled it out, and as we talked, I debated as to whether or not I should give him the card. Surely he knew about Mormons- he was in Utah! Our conversation with Paul went on, and I made up my mind that I would give him the card. As we shook his hand and said goodbye, Shane handed Paul a 5 dollar bill, and I handed him the card. "Sir, I don't have any money to give you, but I do have this card. I don't know how much you know about the LDS church, but they might be able to help you- I know they've helped me in my life. If you're interested, call the number on the back." Is what I told Paul as I handed him the card. He turned it over in his hands, and asked me what the building was on the front of the card. "The Nauvoo Temple," I said, "isn't it pretty?". He said, "Oh, yes, Illinois!", thanked me, and put the card in his pocket. We said goodbye, and got back in the car.
Missionary deed for the day? Done.
As Corey, Shane, and I drove back to campus, we talked about Paul, his circumstances, poverty, and I reflected on my life a little. Looking back, I have concluded that I am not proactive enough in my life when it come to helping people. I think about doing good things, but I don't act. Action is all that matters. From this experience I learned 2 important lessons:
1. I am going to be more mindful of the less fortunate. It is all too common that I shrug them off. Many are victims of circumstance, and I have been given way too much to think I don't have a little to share with others.
2. I am going to carry a pass along card in my wallet from now on. Although I have no idea if Paul will actually look at the card ever again, I would like to think that now he is a step forward on the road to employment and in learning the gospel.
Funny the lessons you can learn at Walmart..

AP Repercussions

I just paid 8 bucks to hear a 10 second recording of my AP grades.
Highway robbery? I think yes. I guess that is the price you pay for being impatient and not wanting to wait another couple days until the scores get mailed out.
Turns out I got a three on both... which is fine for Spanish I guess, but a 3 in Stats gets me absolutely nothing at BYU. What a pity :(
So, with that little bit of info I will continue to try to fanangle myself into Spanish 205, Honors American Heritage, BOM, Honors Writing, Bio 120, and.... we will see.
If you need me, I will be on my date with myMAP.
